Client account, not named

A skip hire start-up in Chester and Flintshire: the decisions before launch, and the first month in Search Console

A skip hire business started this year by two tradesmen in Chester and Flintshire launched its website on 7 September 2026. The client is not named here, by our rule for every case study; every figure is from its Search Console and the project record. It is published because it is the closest thing on this site to a builder’s own situation: a trade start-up with no history, a small number of products, a decision about online booking, and a first month that has to be read without fooling anyone.

The decisions before launch

What was built, and what was deliberately not

  • Four skip sizes, not eight

The owners said what they would actually run. Two sizes were dropped before the site was built rather than listed and never delivered, so every page describes something a customer can order this week.

  • A quote and booking form, phone and pay on delivery; no card checkout

A start-up with two owners does not need a payment processor on day one. The form asks the four questions a booking needs and the phone does the rest; the checkout can come when the volume justifies it.

  • Permits applied for by the business, at cost

An earlier note had the customer arranging the council permit. The owners changed it: they apply, the fee is passed on. The page says so, because it is the question every roadside customer asks.

  • No merchant’s price list

They deliver and collect materials a customer buys elsewhere; they do not sell aggregates. The pages were written so nothing reads as a builders’ merchant, which would have earned the wrong searches and the wrong calls.

  • The real trading name, no “Ltd”

The business is not incorporated. The site says it is the trading name of its two owners and nothing more, which is both honest and the thing a council or an insurer checks.

  • Prices on the page, all in

Each size with its price, not VAT-registered so none to add. A skip is a commodity and the customer is comparing figures; a page without them is not in the comparison.

The first month

Impressions arriving, positions deep, nothing judged yet

From three impressions in the window before launch to 1,231 in the thirty days after, nine clicks, and an average position of 52.4. That is a new domain being tried on searches far down the page, which is what the first month looks like on every site we run and the reason nothing on the site has been touched since launch except a correction to the Saturday hours. The searches that showed are the right ones: skip sizes with town names across Chester, Mold and Buckley, and “order a skip” on two impressions at position 3, which is the booking page being found by the people it was written for and is not yet a ranking.

What was refused in month one: adding town pages for every village the impressions mentioned, which is the pattern that got a Flintshire garage eleven pages dropped from Google’s index, and rewriting any page on a month of data. The work in month one was the Google Business Profile, the waste carrier and insurance questions the owners still had to answer, and reading.

What a builder takes from it

Describe what you actually do, price it, and leave it alone for ninety days

The skip site earned its first searches by describing four real products with real prices and a form that books them, and by refusing to describe anything the owners would not deliver. A builder’s site is the same job with more words: the jobs you take, each on its own page with its range and its photographs, the form that books a survey, and the discipline not to react to the first month’s numbers. The skip site’s day-90 read in December will say whether that patience paid, and it will be here either way.

How to read this page

  • The client is a real account and is not named; the figures are from its Search Console for 4 September to 3 October 2026 and the project record.
  • Nine clicks is a first month on a new domain. The position for “order a skip” rests on two impressions and is not a ranking.
  • The next read is at day 90, in December, and it will be published here.
